Speech Milestones: What to Expect, Age by Age
Every child develops at their own pace, and there’s a wide, normal range. Still, knowing the general milestones can help you feel confident — or know when a quick chat with a therapist might help.
By 12 months
Babbling, a first word or two, and responding to their name.
By 2 years
Around 50+ words and starting to join two words (“more juice”).
By 3 years
Short sentences, and strangers understand much of what they say.
When to check in
If your child seems far behind these markers, or you simply have a niggling worry, an assessment is reassuring either way. Trust your instincts — early support is always gentle and never wasted.
